Should I pay for Klaviyo or use Shopify Email?
Shopify Email is free for 10K emails/mo. Klaviyo starts at $20/mo and gets expensive fast. The break-even is more about flows than list size.
What Shopify Email actually gives you
10K emails/mo free, then $1 per 1,000. Native Shopify integration, basic segmentation, simple drag-and-drop builder, and one automation: abandoned cart. That's it. No browse abandonment, no post-purchase flows, no win-back, no SMS, no real predictive analytics.
If your email strategy is 'one weekly newsletter to my whole list,' Shopify Email covers it. If you need flows that actually compound revenue, you've already outgrown it.
The Klaviyo cost reality
Klaviyo's free tier is 250 contacts and 500 emails. Real pricing: $20/mo at 500 contacts, $60/mo at 5K, $175/mo at 15K, $500+/mo above 50K. Add SMS and double those numbers. Most DTC brands cross $200/mo on Klaviyo before they cross $100K MRR — that's 2% of revenue going to email infra alone.
The flows that actually pay for it: post-purchase, browse abandonment, win-back at day 60, replenishment for consumables. Those four flows typically generate 25-40% of email revenue for DTC brands.
The decision tree
Under 1K subscribers and one newsletter a week: Shopify Email. Building 4+ automated flows and segmenting by behavior: Klaviyo. Considering SMS: Klaviyo, Attentive, or Postscript — not Shopify Email. The break-even isn't list size, it's flow count.
The tools worth comparing
- Klaviyo — The default; deep Shopify integration; segmentation that actually works.
- Omnisend — Cheapest entry tier for ecom-native automation; SMS bundled cleanly; templates designed for Shopify.
