Should I use Shopify or Shopify Plus in 2026?

The honest answer: most brands shouldn't be on Plus, and most operators on Plus didn't need to upgrade when they did.

The math nobody tells you

Plus starts at $2,300/mo (was $2,000 before the 2024 hike). To break even on the upgrade vs the $399 Advanced plan, you need to extract ~$1,900/mo in value the lower tiers can't deliver. The honest list of what only Plus gives you: checkout extensibility (real, big for high-AOV brands), Launchpad (overrated — Shopify Flow on Advanced covers most cases), Shopify Functions on the checkout (real for >$2M GMV), wholesale channel, and unlimited staff accounts.

If you're not actively using checkout extensibility or Functions, you're paying ~$1,900/mo for the badge. The badge does not lift conversion.

Three signals you actually need Plus

One: you're hitting Shopify's 60-app limit on the Advanced plan and consolidation isn't possible. Two: you need server-to-server checkout customization for compliance (B2B, regulated goods, complex tax). Three: your CRO team can show a specific test that requires checkout extensibility — measurable lift estimate > $25K/yr.

If none of those apply, stay on Advanced. The $24K/yr savings funds a real creative budget.

When to actually upgrade

Practical heuristic: upgrade when your monthly Shopify-related software cost (Shopify + apps + dev work) crosses ~$3.5K/mo. At that point Plus pricing is in noise. Below it, Plus is a tax on insecurity.
