Why do my Instagram ads cost more than Meta ads?
They are Meta ads — Instagram is a placement. If IG-only placement is more expensive than auto-placement, you're paying a premium for the placement choice. Sometimes worth it, often not.
Placement vs platform
Meta ads run on Facebook feed, Instagram feed, IG Stories, IG Reels, FB Marketplace, Messenger, Audience Network. When you restrict to IG-only, you're competing with fewer placements but in a more saturated auction.
Why IG-only costs more
(1) IG audiences over-index on higher-value demographics, so CPMs are higher to reach them. (2) IG ad inventory is scarcer than FB feed. (3) Restricting placements removes Meta's ability to find cheaper conversions elsewhere — fewer auctions to win.
When IG-only is worth it
When your creative is specifically built for IG aesthetic (vertical, native, story-format) and underperforms on FB feed. Otherwise: use auto-placement and let Meta find the cheapest converter. Most brands shouldn't restrict.
