The Shopify app stack for cosmetics brands under $1M MRR (2026)
Beauty brands stack apps differently than supplements or apparel. The stack below is what we've seen work across 30+ cosmetics brands at $30K-$1M MRR — no enterprise tools, no $500/mo monthlies, just the apps that pay for themselves.
The total monthly budget
For a cosmetics brand at $100K MRR, the app stack should run $400-$900/mo, all-in. Brands spending more than $1,500/mo on apps at this stage are usually paying for capabilities they don't yet need. Brands spending under $250/mo are missing essentials.
Tier 1: install on day one
- Klaviyo ($30-$300/mo by list size) — email + SMS. Non-negotiable. Beauty repeat-purchase economics are unworkable without it.
- Yotpo or Okendo ($15-$199/mo) — reviews. Pick one. Yotpo for ecosystem breadth, Okendo for prettier UI + faster setup.
- Recharge or Stay AI ($99-$299/mo + 1.25-2% revenue) — subscription. Cosmetics with consumable products (serum, cleanser, mascara) lose 30-50% of LTV without subscription.
Tier 2: install by $50K MRR
- Smile.io or LoyaltyLion ($49-$199/mo) — loyalty program. Beauty buyers are habituated to point systems (Sephora, Ulta).
- Rebuy or LimeSpot ($99-$249/mo) — post-add-to-cart upsell. Drives 8-18% AOV lift in cosmetics specifically.
- ShipBob or Shopify Fulfillment (FBM/3PL — variable cost) — once order volume exceeds 500/mo, fulfillment becomes the operational bottleneck.
Tier 3: install at $200K+ MRR
- Triple Whale ($129+/mo) — attribution. The 20-50% over-reporting in Meta's Ads Manager becomes a budget problem at this scale.
- Foreplay ($49-$99/mo) — ad library research for creative ops.
- Postscript or Attentive — SMS-specific if Klaviyo SMS isn't enough. Most beauty brands stay on Klaviyo SMS.
What to skip
Apps that look tempting but rarely pay back at sub-$1M MRR:
- Headless CMS replacements (Hydrogen, Sanity) — premature unless you have a specific PDP requirement Liquid can't meet.
- Multi-currency rounding apps — Shopify Markets handles 80% of this for free.
- Wishlist apps — beauty buyers don't wishlist; they checkout or bounce.
- Quiz apps over $99/mo (Octane AI, etc.) — the conversion lift rarely justifies the price below $300K MRR. Use Shopify's native product recommendations until you have data to feed a quiz.
The high-use move
If we had to pick one tier-1 app to over-invest in, it's Klaviyo. The 6-email post-purchase flow alone produces 15-30% LTV lift. Everything else in the stack compounds on top of that flow. Set up Klaviyo properly first; everything else can wait 30 days.
The tools worth comparing
- Klaviyo — The default; deep Shopify integration; segmentation that actually works.
- Yotpo — Deepest reviews feature set; bundled discounts when stacking modules.
- Okendo — Best-in-class review widget design; deep Shopify integration; founder-led product.
- Recharge — Category leader; deepest subscription feature set; integrates with everything.
- Smile.io — Easy setup, generous free tier, good Shopify integration depth.
